HB 56 Fails - Real estate disclosure-methamphetamine laboratories.    2/16/08
Rep. Lisa Shepperson, R-Casper, There were quite a few of us that discussed this and we all agreed that this would take quite a bit of work and encouraged Rep. Brechtel to work on it and bring it back next session. The concerns we have are:  What is a reasonable diligence?  If you don’t know, do you have to hire a chemist? How far do you have to go to release yourself from liability?  What constitutes that you SHOULD know? There was too much doubt in that section of the bill and I felt it would put an undue burden on property owners and their rights and open up lawsuits where there shouldn’t be any. read more

HB 87 Fails - Statewide Smoking Ban - 2/15/08

Rep. Lisa Shepperson, R-Casper, urged the House to reject the bill. She said smoking is a legal activity that takes place on private property and said the issue of any ban needed to be decided by local governments around the state.

“Before long, I’m not going to be able to go to McDonald’s and order a Quarter Pounder with Cheese,” Shepperson said. She said that she might be forced to order a salad, “because it’s good for my health.” read more

HB 58 Safety belt violations.  2/5/08

Rep. Lisa Shepperson, R-Casper, said she opposes the seat belt bill because most state residents oppose it and because buckling up comes down to personal responsibility. She said government shouldn't mandate everything a person does.

'Politicians assume the general public is stupid, and I don't,' Shepperson said. 'The public knows right from wrong and you don't have to force them to do this.' read more
